Journal: Matthew 1–5
Matthew Chapter 1
1) Summary
This chapter begins with the genealogy of Jesus, tracing His lineage from Abraham through David to Joseph, showing that Jesus fulfills God’s covenant promises. It then describes the miraculous birth of Jesus through the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit. Joseph is reassured in a dream that the child is from God and is to be named Jesus, meaning “The Lord saves,” because He will save His people from their sins.
Key Scripture
“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
— Matthew 1:21
2) Reflection
This chapter reminds me that God works through generations, history, and even imperfect people to fulfill His divine plan. The genealogy includes individuals with broken pasts, yet God still used them. This shows that God’s grace is greater than human failures.
Joseph’s obedience also speaks powerfully. Even though the situation was confusing and difficult, he trusted God and followed His instruction faithfully.
3) Response
Lord, thank You that Your plans are not limited by human weakness or past mistakes. Help me to trust Your purposes in my life just as Joseph did. Give me a heart that obeys You even when the path ahead is unclear.
Matthew Chapter 2
1) Summary
Wise men from the East follow a star to find the newborn King, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. King Herod, feeling threatened, secretly plots to kill the child. God warns Joseph in a dream to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus. Later, after Herod’s death, they return and settle in Nazareth.
Key Scripture
“Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
— Matthew 2:2
2) Reflection
The wise men traveled a great distance simply to worship Jesus. Their determination challenges me to examine how deeply I desire to seek and honor Christ. Meanwhile, Herod’s fear and pride show how worldly power resists God’s authority.
God’s protection over Jesus also reveals His sovereignty over history and danger.
3) Response
Father, give me a heart like the wise men, eager to seek and worship You. Protect me from pride and fear that resist Your authority. Help me trust that You are guiding and protecting my life.
Matthew Chapter 3
1) Summary
John the Baptist prepares the way for Jesus by calling people to repentance. He baptizes many in the Jordan River and warns religious leaders about hypocrisy. Jesus Himself comes to be baptized, and as He rises from the water, the heavens open, the Spirit descends like a dove, and God declares Jesus as His beloved Son.
Key Scripture
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
— Matthew 3:2
2) Reflection
John’s message reminds me that repentance is the doorway to experiencing God’s kingdom. It is not merely feeling sorry but turning my life toward God.
Jesus’ baptism also demonstrates humility. Though sinless, He identified with humanity and fulfilled God’s righteousness.
3) Response
Lord, search my heart and reveal areas where I need to repent. Help me turn away from sin and walk in obedience. Give me humility like Jesus, who chose obedience to Your will.
Matthew Chapter 4
1) Summary
Jesus is led into the wilderness where He is tempted by the devil. Each temptation is resisted with the Word of God. Afterward, Jesus begins His public ministry in Galilee, preaching repentance and calling His first disciples—Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Crowds begin following Him as He teaches and heals many.
Key Scripture
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
— Matthew 4:4
2) Reflection
Jesus shows that spiritual strength comes from relying on God’s Word. Temptation often attacks our needs, identity, and trust in God, just as it did with Jesus.
His call to the disciples also reminds me that following Jesus requires leaving behind comfort and trusting His leadership.
3) Response
Lord, help me rely on Your Word when I face temptation. Strengthen my faith so I may resist sin. Teach me to follow You wholeheartedly, trusting that Your path leads to true life.
Matthew Chapter 5
1) Summary
This chapter contains the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus teaches the Beatitudes, describing the attitudes of those who belong to God’s kingdom. He calls believers to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world and explains that true righteousness goes deeper than external obedience—it transforms the heart.
Key Scripture
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
— Matthew 5:8
2) Reflection
Jesus’ teaching challenges the way the world defines blessing and success. Instead of power or wealth, He values humility, mercy, purity, and peace.
The call to be salt and light reminds me that my life should influence the world by reflecting God’s character.
3) Response
Lord, transform my heart so that my life reflects Your kingdom values. Help me to live humbly, show mercy, and pursue righteousness. May my life shine as a light that points others to You.
