The Way of the Pharisee and the Way of the Tax Collector Luke 18:9–14

📖 Text: Luke 18:9–14 🗣️ Preacher: Dr. Chuah 1. Introduction — Seeking Approval is Universal Dr. Chuah begins by reminding us that “all of us are on a quest for justification.” To seek justification means to seek approval — a deep, universal longing present in every human heart. Luke 18:9 – “To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable.” Everyone seeks approval — children from parents, employees from employers — but ultimately, we all desire approval from God, to one day hear Him say: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:23) This longing for divine approval can either lead us into humility and grace , or into self-righteousness and pride . Jesus illustrates both paths through this parable.    2. The Setting of the Parable Two men went up to the temple to pray: One a Pharisee , religious and morally upright. The other, a Tax Collector , despised and seen as a sinner. ...

🌿 Opening Prayer O Gracious and Loving Father, We come before Thee this blessed day with hearts overflowing in thanksgiving. We thank Thee for gathering us safely this morning. We praise Thee for the fellowship of believers, for the love that binds us as one family in Christ, and for the joy of dwelling in Thy presence. Lord, as we reflect upon the message, “Aging is Mandatory, Feeling Old is Optional,” teach us to embrace every season of life as a sacred gift from Thee. Though our bodies may grow frail, may our spirits be ever renewed by Thy strength. Grant us wisdom to walk humbly, patience to endure, and joy to continue serving Thee with gladness of heart. Let Thy Holy Spirit move among us this day — to open our ears, soften our hearts, and guide our speech — that all we say and share may bring glory unto Thy holy name. We commit this gathering into Thy loving hands, Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Redeemer, Amen. 📖 Scripture: Ecclesiastes 12:1–12 Speaker...

Journalling Job 11 to 15

📖 Job Chapter 11 1. Bible Summary Zophar, Job’s third friend, speaks harshly against him. He accuses Job of being proud and deserving even greater punishment from God. Zophar insists that Job’s suffering must be due to sin and urges him to repent so that God may restore him. However, Zophar’s words lack compassion and understanding of Job’s true situation. 2. Key Scripture “If you devote your heart to him and stretch out your hands to him... then, free of fault, you will lift up your face; you will stand firm and without fear.” — Job 11:13,15 (NIV) 3. Reflection Zophar’s speech reminds us that even well-meaning people can misjudge others’ pain. He assumes Job’s suffering must come from sin, not realizing that Job’s trial was a test of faith. Sometimes, we too speak without understanding another’s struggle, forgetting that God alone knows every heart. 4. Response Lord, help me to be slow to judge and quick to listen. Teach me to comfort others with empathy and grace instead o...
