Rising Above Costly Mistakes Ruth 1:1–22 Pastor Henry Yong

Sermon Summary – Rising Above Costly Mistakes

Preacher: Pastor Henry Yong
Date: 24 August 2025
Scripture Passage: Ruth 1:1–22

Introduction

Pastor Henry reminded us that life is a journey marked by decisions, and these choices carry consequences not only for ourselves but also for those around us. The story of Naomi and her family in Ruth 1 shows us how decisions made outside of God’s will can bring pain, yet also how God’s grace can still redeem broken lives.

Point 1 – Costly Decisions Outside God’s Will
Scripture: “Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons” (Ruth 1:3).

Pastor Henry emphasized that Elimelek’s choice to leave Bethlehem for Moab during famine was made without waiting on God. What seemed practical ended in disaster—Naomi lost her husband and later her two sons. Pastor Henry reminded us that decisions made without prayer, guided by fear or convenience, often lead to spiritual and emotional loss. We are called instead to trust God even in times of hardship, for He is our true provider.

Point 2 – Naomi’s Bitterness and God’s Hidden Grace
Scripture: “Don’t call me Naomi… Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter” (Ruth 1:20).

Pastor Henry stressed that Naomi returned home broken, believing her life was beyond repair. Yet, though Naomi felt empty, God’s grace was quietly present in Ruth’s unwavering loyalty: “Where you go I will go… your God will be my God” (Ruth 1:16). Pastor Henry highlighted that when we feel abandoned or bitter, God is often working behind the scenes. His hidden grace reminds us that no situation is too hopeless for His redemption.

Point 3 – A Call to Parents and Families
Scripture: “The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them” (Proverbs 20:7).

Pastor Henry pointed out that Elimelek’s decisions did not only affect himself but his entire family. As parents and spiritual leaders, we bear the responsibility to guide our families toward God. Pastor Henry urged fathers and mothers to be intentional in praying, teaching, and correcting their children in love. Choices of faith and obedience can plant seeds of blessing for generations to come, while neglect can lead to painful consequences.

Conclusion

Pastor Henry concluded by reminding us that although Ruth 1 begins with famine, loss, and bitterness, it is also the starting point of God’s plan for redemption. Out of Naomi’s pain came Ruth’s faith, and through Ruth came King David and ultimately Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of the world. Our mistakes may be costly, but in God’s hands they can become part of His greater story of grace.

Take-Home Message

When our choices lead to loss and pain, God’s mercy still breaks through the chain. He turns our sorrow into seeds of grace, and from our ashes brings a brighter place. Though mistakes may whisper, “It’s the end,” His love restores, His hand will mend. So walk in faith, and do not fear— His redeeming power is always near. Amen.
