What Kind of King Are You Welcoming? 你欢迎的是怎样的君王？ Matthew 21:8–11 马太福音 21:8–11

Rev Aaron Liu reminds us that Palm Sunday presents a powerful and vivid scene recorded in Matthew 21:8–11—a moment filled with celebration, hope, and expectation. The crowds laid down their cloaks, waved palm branches, and shouted “Hosanna,” welcoming Jesus as King. It appeared like a moment of triumph and victory.

Yet, within a few days, the same voices would cry for His crucifixion. This reveals a deep tension: they welcomed Jesus, but they misunderstood Him.

Rev Aaron challenges us to reflect deeply—not whether we welcome Jesus, but what kind of King we are welcoming into our lives.

1. Lay Down Your Cloaks 放下你的外衣
Scripture 经文：Matthew 21:8
Rev Aaron explains that laying down cloaks was a public and visible act of honor and submission to a king. It symbolized recognition of Jesus’ authority and worthiness.
刘牧师解释说，把衣服铺在路上是对君王公开的尊荣与顺服的象征，代表承认耶稣的权柄与配得。
However, he cautions that it is possible to honor Jesus externally while withholding true surrender internally. Today, our “cloaks” may be our church attendance, service, or giving—but these can remain superficial if our hearts are not fully yielded.
然而，他提醒我们，人可能在外表上尊荣耶稣，却在内心没有真正降服。今天我们的“外衣”可能是聚会、服事或奉献，但若内心未完全交托，这些仍可能只是表面的。
He invites us to examine what we are unwilling to surrender—our control, expectations, comfort, or pride.
他邀请我们省察：我们是否仍紧抓控制权、期待、舒适或骄傲，不愿交托给神。
True honor is not symbolic—it is surrender. Some lay down their cloaks, but keep their conditions.
真正的尊荣不只是象征，而是降服。有些人放下外衣，却保留自己的条件。
2. Proclaim His Kingship 宣告祂的王权
Scripture 经文：Matthew 21:9
The crowd shouted “Hosanna,” meaning “Save us now.” While their declaration was theologically correct, their expectations were misplaced—they were looking for a political savior.
人群呼喊“和散那”，意思是“现在拯救我们”。虽然他们的宣告在神学上是正确的，但他们的期待却是错误的——他们想要一位政治性的拯救者。
Rev Aaron points out that we often do the same. We ask God to save us—but according to our own plans and desires.

Instead of immediately changing our circumstances, God often begins by transforming our hearts, teaching us to trust Him beyond our understanding.

The question is not whether we call Him Lord, but whether He truly reigns over our lives when things do not go our way.

3. Respond to the King 回应这位君王
Scripture 经文：Matthew 21:10
As Jesus entered Jerusalem, people asked, “Who is this?” Rev Aaron emphasizes that this question demands a personal response from each of us.
当耶稣进入耶路撒冷时，人们问：“这是谁？”刘牧师强调，这个问题要求我们每一个人作出个人回应。
There is no neutral response—indifference, delay, or partial surrender are all responses.
没有人可以中立——冷漠、拖延或部分顺服，都是一种回应。
He shares a deeply personal testimony of loss, showing that true surrender is revealed not when life is easy, but when expectations are broken.
他分享了自己失去孩子的经历，说明真正的降服不是在顺境中显明，而是在期望破碎时显明。
The real question becomes: Is Jesus still King when He does not meet our expectations?
真正的问题是：当神没有照我们的期望行事时，耶稣仍然是王吗？
Conclusion 总结
Palm Sunday reveals a profound irony: the same crowd that welcomed Jesus with palm branches later rejected Him at the cross. They desired a conquering king, but Jesus came as a suffering King to save humanity from sin.
棕枝主日揭示了一个深刻的反讽：同一群人用棕枝欢迎耶稣，却在十字架前拒绝祂。他们想要一位得胜的君王，但耶稣却以受苦的君王来拯救人类脱离罪。
Rev Aaron reminds us that Jesus is the true King—the King who came in humility, died in love, and rose again in victory. He calls us to move beyond surface-level faith into genuine surrender.

1. What expectations do you have of Jesus and how might they differ from who He truly is?

We often expect Jesus to bring comfort, success, and immediate solutions.

However, He reveals Himself as a Suffering King who transforms our hearts rather than simply changing our circumstances.

This challenges us to shift from seeking control to trusting His greater purpose.

2. In what ways have you honoured Jesus externally but not surrendered internally?

We may serve, attend church, and speak the right words, yet still hold on to our own desires and control.
我们可能参与服事、参加教会、说正确的话语，但仍紧抓自己的欲望和控制权。
External actions can mask an unwillingness to obey God fully, especially when obedience is costly.
外在的行为可能掩盖我们不愿完全顺服神的心，尤其是在顺服需要付出代价的时候。
3. How can you identify and lay down the cloaks of control in your life?
你如何辨认并放下生命中“控制的外衣”？
We begin by identifying areas where we resist God—our plans, relationships, or fears.
我们可以从辨认那些抗拒神的领域开始——例如我们的计划、人际关系或内心的恐惧。
Surrender happens when we consciously release control and take steps of obedience, trusting God even when we do not fully understand.
当我们有意识地放下控制，并采取顺服的行动，即使不完全明白仍然信靠神时，真正的降服就发生了。
4. How does understanding Jesus as the King who suffers change your perspective on hardship?
认识耶稣是受苦的君王，如何改变你对苦难的看法？
Seeing Jesus as the Suffering King helps us understand that hardship is not meaningless.
当我们看见耶稣是受苦的君王，就明白苦难并非毫无意义。
God is present in our pain, and suffering becomes a place of transformation.
神在我们的痛苦中同在，而苦难也成为生命被改变的地方。
Just as the cross led to resurrection, our trials can lead to deeper faith and hope.
正如十字架通向复活，我们的试炼也能带来更深的信心与盼望。
Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come before You this day with humble and grateful hearts. Thank You for gathering us as Your people, not by our strength, but by Your grace. As we begin this discipleship meeting, we invite Your Holy Spirit to be present among us.
Lord, open our hearts to Your Word and quiet every distraction within us. As we reflect on the message from Rev Aaron Liu, help us not just to hear, but to truly receive. Search us, O God, and reveal the areas where we are still holding on to control, expectations, and our own ways.
Teach us what it means to truly welcome You—not just with our lips, but with surrendered hearts. Help us to lay down our cloaks, our conditions, and our fears before You, and to recognize You as the true King over every area of our lives.
We also thank You, Lord, for Your servant Rev Aaron Liu, for the powerful and heartfelt message he has shared. Bless him, strengthen him, and continue to anoint him with wisdom, humility, and grace as he leads Your people.
We lift up Danny Chiew and all the church team members before You. Thank You for their faithful service, their dedication, and their readiness in preparing and managing all things for Your glory. Renew their strength, grant them unity, and fill them with joy as they serve.

Closing Prayer
Gracious and Sovereign King,
We thank You for speaking to us today. Your Word has reminded us that You are not a King we can shape, but a King we are called to surrender to.
Lord, forgive us for the times we have welcomed You with conditions—when we have trusted You only when it was easy, and resisted You when it was costly. Today, we choose again to surrender. Teach us to trust You not only when we understand, but even when we do not.
As we go from this place, help us to walk in obedience. Give us courage to lay down the areas we have been holding on to, and faith to follow You wholeheartedly. May our lives reflect true surrender, not just outward worship.
We once again lift up Rev Aaron Liu into Your hands. Continue to use him mightily for Your kingdom. Bless Danny Chiew and every member of the church team. May they be refreshed, encouraged, and strengthened as they serve You faithfully.
Lord, as we enter this Holy Week, help us to behold You—
the King who came in humility,
the King who suffered in love,
and the King who reigns in victory.
May Your peace, Your presence, and Your power go with us.
Keep us close to You, and make us faithful disciples in all that we do.
