Enrolling in God’s Brigade : Galatians 5:1; 13–25 Reverend Aaron Liu
29th June 2025 – Boys’ & Girls’ Brigade Enrolment Sunday
Sermon Title: Enrolling in God’s Brigade
Preacher: Reverend Aaron Liu
Scripture: Galatians 5:1; 13–25
Sermon Summary:
On this Enrolment Sunday, Reverend Aaron Liu reminded us that joining the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade is symbolic of a much greater calling—our enrolment in God’s eternal brigade. The message centers on the true meaning of freedom in Christ—not as a personal entitlement, but a divine responsibility.
Through Galatians 5, Paul encourages us to:
1. Stand Steadfast in Freedom
📖 Galatians 5:1 – “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
-
Freedom is a responsibility, not just a right.
-
We are freed from sin, not to serve ourselves, but to serve God and others.
-
True Christian freedom resists returning to the bondage of legalism or self-indulgence.
2. Serve Selflessly in Love
📖 Galatians 5:13–14 – “Serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
-
Love expresses itself through service.
-
When we use our freedom to humbly serve others, we fulfill the law of Christ.
-
Our service strengthens and builds the Body of Christ—fostering unity and purpose.
3. Spirit-Driven Living
📖 Galatians 5:16–25 – “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
-
The Spirit empowers us to resist the desires of the flesh.
-
We are to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
-
Spirit-led living is the evidence of true discipleship and the mark of one truly enrolled in God's brigade.
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” – 2 Corinthians 3:17
Conclusion:
As we reflect on our enrolment into God's brigade, we are reminded that it is not about ceremony or badges, but about character and calling. Being part of His army means embracing a life of purpose—grounded in freedom, modeled through love, and guided by the Spirit. Whether young or old, every believer is commissioned to live with courage, compassion, and conviction. May our lives be a testimony to the transforming power of Christ’s freedom.
Take-Home Message:
True freedom in Christ calls us to love, serve, and follow the Spirit. As members of God’s brigade, we are not enlisted by force but by grace—called to stand firm in faith, to serve others humbly, and to live Spirit-led lives that reflect Christ’s love.
Reflection & Discussion Questions (with Answers):
1. What does Paul mean when he says that freedom in Christ is a calling, not just a condition?
Answer:
Freedom in Christ is not merely a status—it is an invitation to live differently. It calls us to reject sin and selfishness and embrace a new way of living marked by love, holiness, and service. It is freedom with purpose.
2. In what ways can we demonstrate our response to the freedom Christ has given us in our daily lives?
Answer:
-
Choosing kindness over retaliation
-
Serving without expecting anything in return
-
Speaking life and encouragement to others
-
Living with integrity and resisting temptation
-
Prioritizing time with God and seeking His guidance daily
3. How can understanding that freedom is meant for serving others change our perspective on how we use our own freedoms?
Answer:
It helps us see freedom not as a tool for self-gratification, but as a platform to uplift others. It reframes our actions—encouraging us to use our time, influence, and abilities to bless, rather than to dominate or isolate.
4. What are some specific actions we can take to support and serve the younger members of our church community?
Answer:
-
Providing mentorship and spiritual guidance
-
Encouraging them to participate actively in church life
-
Teaching them biblical truths through relatable lessons
-
Praying with and for them regularly
-
Affirming their efforts and helping them grow in confidence and faith
Let us walk faithfully, serve lovingly, and live freely—enrolled in God’s brigade for life.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for gathering us today as a Discipleship Group. We are grateful for the time of sharing, reflection, and growing together in Thy Word. Thank You for reminding us that true freedom in Christ is not a right to be claimed, but a responsibility to love, serve, and walk humbly with You.
We give thanks for the recent Enrolment Sunday—for the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade, and for the symbolic reminder that we are enrolled not just in a ministry, but in Your eternal Kingdom. Help us live out that calling with honour and faithfulness.
We lift up to You our upcoming Church Camp. May it be a powerful time of spiritual renewal, unity, and deepening faith. We pray for the speakers, the planning committee, and every participant—that You would prepare our hearts and pour out Your presence richly throughout the camp.
We also commit the Hatyai Trip into Thy hands. Grant safe travels, joyful fellowship, and meaningful opportunities to be a blessing and to be blessed.
As we prepare for Community Day on 19th July, we ask for Thy favour and leading. May it be a time where Thy love is made visible to the community around us—through every smile, every act of kindness, and every interaction.
Thank You again for Thy faithfulness. As we go, may we continue to walk as disciples—rooted in truth, filled with Your Spirit, and shining as lights in this world.
In Jesus’ powerful name we pray,
Amen.
