Introduction

引言

In this sermon titled “Journey of Grace – Living As Children of the Light,” Bro Yap Koon Roy reflects on Ephesians 5:8–14, reminding believers of their transformed identity in Christ. He emphasizes that the Christian life is not merely about religious practice, but about a profound change brought about by God’s grace.

The apostle Paul declares that believers were once darkness, but now they are light in the Lord. This statement reveals not just a change in behavior, but a complete transformation of identity.

Through a real-life illustration, the sermon shows how life’s apparent security can be deceptive. When crisis comes, what once seemed meaningful can collapse, revealing the emptiness of life apart from God. It is often in such moments that the light of the gospel becomes real and life-giving.

1. Transformation by Grace – From Darkness to Light

Scripture: Ephesians 5:8

Paul emphasizes that transformation by grace describes a profound spiritual transition from darkness to light. This change is not partial but total, affecting the believer’s identity, purpose, and direction in life.

Darkness represents ignorance of God, spiritual blindness, sin, and separation from Him. It is a life centered on self, often driven by pride, fear, and false security.

Light, on the other hand, represents truth and holiness. It is both knowing God and living according to His ways. This transformation is entirely the work of God’s grace, not human effort.

Believers are therefore called to recognize this new identity and live accordingly.

2. Living as Children of Light

Scripture: Ephesians 5:8, 11

Paul gives a clear call: believers must live as children of light. This involves both a positive and a negative response—actively pursuing what pleases God while rejecting the fruitless deeds of darkness.

Living as children of light means walking in truth and holiness in daily life. It is not limited to church activities but extends to our relationships, speech, attitudes, and decisions.

The sermon highlights that darkness still exists in subtle forms today, such as hurtful speech, favoritism, isolation, neglecting God, and even drifting away from faith.

These remind believers that they must continually examine their lives and choose to walk in the light.

3. The Fruit of the Light

Scripture: Ephesians 5:9

Paul explains that the fruit of the light is seen in goodness, righteousness, and truth. True light naturally manifests itself through these qualities.

Goodness is expressed through kindness, compassion, and love toward others.
Righteousness reflects integrity and doing what is right before God.
Truth involves sincerity, honesty, and a life without hypocrisy.

良善体现在对他人的爱心与怜悯;
公义表现在正直与合神心意的行为;

These are not merely outward behaviors, but evidence of an inward transformation by God’s grace.

When believers live this way, they become a testimony of God’s light to the world around them.

4. Grace as the Power for Transformation

The sermon reminds us that grace is not just a free gift for salvation, but also the power that reshapes the believer’s character and actions.

Believers are not left to struggle on their own. God provides strength through His Spirit, enabling them to live out their calling as children of light.

This means transformation is possible, even in areas where we feel weak or discouraged.

5. The Gospel Invitation – Awake and Shine

Scripture: Ephesians 5:14

The passage concludes with a powerful invitation:
“Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

This reflects the heart of the gospel—the condition of humanity, the call to respond, and the promise of Christ’s light.

It is an invitation to step out of spiritual darkness and into the life-giving light of Christ.

Conclusion

结论

Bro Yap reminds us that the journey of grace is a continuous walk from darkness to light. It is not a one-time event, but a daily calling to live according to our new identity in Christ.

As children of light, believers are called to reflect Christ in their lives and shine in a world that is still filled with darkness.

The sermon also challenges believers to examine their hearts, depend on God’s grace, and intentionally live as a testimony of His truth and love.

Take-Home Message

Because we are transformed by grace from darkness into light, we are called to live as children of light, reflecting God’s truth, goodness, and righteousness in every area of our lives.

Reflection Questions & Suggested Answers

1. What is your understanding of “Light” and “Darkness” in Ephesians 5?

Light represents both truth and holiness. It is the knowledge of God and the ability to live according to His ways. It is not just about knowing what is right, but also living it out in daily life.

Darkness, on the other hand, represents ignorance, sin, and separation from God. It is living without truth, often driven by self, pride, or worldly values. Darkness can sometimes appear attractive or harmless, but it ultimately leads to emptiness and spiritual death.

In simple terms, light is a life centered on God, while darkness is a life centered on self.

2. What are your personal challenges in producing fruits of light?

One common challenge is balancing truth and grace. For example, telling the truth in a family situation may create tension or conflict. There is a temptation to remain silent to keep peace, but silence may compromise righteousness.

Another challenge is maintaining a Christlike attitude in difficult relationships. It is easy to react with frustration, criticism, or impatience instead of kindness and goodness.

There are also internal struggles such as pride, fear of rejection, or the desire for approval, which can prevent us from living authentically in truth.

These challenges remind us that producing the fruit of light requires dependence on God’s grace daily.

3. Share observations of Christians who do not walk in the light

There are times when believers struggle with hypocrisy—professing faith outwardly but living differently in private. This may be seen in areas such as dishonesty, gossip, or lack of integrity.

Others may become judgmental, emphasizing righteousness without grace, which can push people away instead of drawing them to Christ.

There are also situations where Christians withdraw from community, choosing isolation instead of living out their faith in relationships. This limits their ability to reflect God’s love and light.

These examples are not meant for criticism, but as reminders that all of us are still on a journey and need God’s grace continually.

4. Is our local church a community of light? Would others be drawn to it?

A church becomes a community of light when its members reflect Christ in their relationships, attitudes, and actions. This includes showing love, practicing forgiveness, supporting one another, and living authentically.

If a church is marked by unity, humility, and genuine care, people will naturally be drawn to it. They will see something different—a reflection of God’s presence.

However, if there is division, criticism, or lack of love, it can obscure the light and discourage others.

Therefore, each member plays a part in shaping the church community. When we individually choose to walk in the light, together we become a powerful witness to the world.

Here are Opening and Closing Prayers for your Discipleship Group meeting tomorrow (Friday), written in a warm, reverent, and reflective tone suitable for fellowship and sharing.

🌿 Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father,
we come before You with grateful hearts, thanking You for this day and for the opportunity to gather together as Your people. Thank You for Your grace that has brought us out of darkness into Your marvelous light.

Lord, as we begin this Discipleship Group meeting, we invite Your presence to be with us. Quiet our hearts and help us to set aside the busyness, worries, and distractions of the day. Teach us to be still before You, to listen, and to receive what You want to speak into our lives.

Father, open our hearts to Your Word this morning. Help us not only to understand with our minds, but to be transformed in our hearts. As we reflect on what it means to live as children of light, reveal areas in our lives that need Your touch, Your correction, and Your grace.

Bless our time of sharing and fellowship. May we speak words that build up, encourage, and strengthen one another. Let this be a safe place where we can be honest, support each other, and grow together in love.

We commit this time into Your hands. Lead us by Your Spirit, and may everything we do bring glory to Your name.

In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.

🌿 Closing Prayer

Loving Father,
we thank You for this time we have spent together in Your presence. Thank You for Your Word that has spoken to us, challenged us, and reminded us of who we are in You—that we are no longer in darkness, but children of light.

Lord, we ask that what we have heard and shared this morning will not remain only as words, but will take root in our hearts. Help us to live it out in our daily lives—in our homes, workplaces, and relationships. Teach us to walk in Your truth, to reflect Your goodness, and to shine Your light in the places You have placed us.

Father, strengthen each one of us. For those who are tired, bring rest. For those who are struggling, bring comfort and guidance. For those who are seeking direction, shine Your light clearly upon their path.

We also pray for unity and love within our group. Help us to continue supporting one another, encouraging one another, and growing together as a community that reflects Your light.

As we leave this place, go with us, Lord. May Your presence guide us, protect us, and empower us to be a blessing to others.

We thank You and commit all things into Your hands.

In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen. 🌿
