Introduction
引言
As we enter the Lenten season and reflect on Christ’s journey toward the cross, we are invited to consider the meaning of the wilderness in our own spiritual lives.
In Matthew 4:1, we read, “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”
This verse immediately tells us something important: the wilderness was not accidental. It was intentional. The Spirit led Jesus there.
The wilderness, therefore, is not merely a barren desert place. It represents a season in our spiritual journey when God brings us into deeper dependence on Him.
It may be a time of dryness, confusion, disappointment, or testing. Yet it is also a sacred space where God shapes, refines, and transforms us.
Rev Ronnie Chiu shared from his personal experience serving in the slums of Smoky Mountain in Manila.
Confronted with overwhelming poverty, he questioned the value of preaching the gospel when physical needs were so great.
In that moment of despair — his own wilderness — God impressed upon his heart that only God can truly transform lives.
The wilderness shifted his confidence from his own ability to God’s power and mercy.
1. The Wilderness Is God’s Intentional Work
Scripture clearly states that Jesus was “led by the Spirit” (Matthew 4:1).
This reminds us that wilderness seasons are not random events. They are part of God’s sovereign purpose.
Often, when we feel spiritually dry or distant from God, we ask, “Where is God?”
Yet perhaps the better question is, “What is God teaching me?”
Wilderness seasons strip away distractions. They reveal our weaknesses and bring hidden struggles into the light.
They expose what we truly depend on.
God does not waste our wilderness experiences. Just as He prepared Jesus for His public ministry, He uses these seasons to prepare us for greater spiritual maturity.
2. Temptation Comes in Our Weakest Moments
After fasting forty days and forty nights, “He was hungry” (Matthew 4:2).
At His most physically vulnerable moment, the tempter came.
Temptation often strikes not when we are strong, but when we are tired, discouraged, lonely, or emotionally drained.
In this passage, Jesus faces three major temptations that reflect common struggles in every believer’s life.
The First Temptation: Physical Needs and Desires
The devil said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread” (Matthew 4:3).
This temptation focused on physical need and desire.
Yet Jesus replied, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:4).
While physical needs are real, they must never override obedience to God.
True life is sustained not merely by provision, but by God’s Word.
The Second Temptation: Pride and Entitlement
The devil urged Jesus to throw Himself down from the temple, suggesting that angels would protect Him (Matthew 4:5–6).
Jesus answered, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test” (Matthew 4:7).
Pride tempts us to prove ourselves and demand recognition.
Yet faith does not test God; it trusts Him.
Trust replaces entitlement.
The Third Temptation: Power and Success
The devil showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor (Matthew 4:8–9).
Jesus responded, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only” (Matthew 4:10).
The world measures success by status, wealth, and influence.
But true success is measured by obedience to God’s will.
The safest place to be is in obedience to Him.
3. God’s Mercy Revealed in the Wilderness
Jesus understands our struggles because He experienced temptation Himself (Hebrews 4:15).
God’s mercy is seen in that we are not alone in our testing.
He assures us that there is always a way out of temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13).
After the temptations ended, “the devil left him, and angels came and attended him” (Matthew 4:11).
God sustains those who endure faithfully.
Conclusion
结论
The wilderness road is a necessary part of the Christian journey.
It reveals our misplaced desires, exposes our pride, and challenges our pursuit of worldly success.
Yet through it all, God’s mercy sustains us.
Jesus shows us how to overcome: by standing firm on Scripture, trusting in God’s faithful love, and worshiping God alone.
The wilderness does not weaken true faith — it strengthens it.
When we walk through our own seasons of dryness or testing, we can take courage.
The Spirit may have led us there, and God is at work.
