Sermon Title: Living in the Light of Christ’s Coming

Scripture Passage: 1 Thessalonians 5:23–28 (NIV)
Preacher: Rev. Aaron Liu
Date: Last Sunday

Summary

Rev. Aaron Liu began by reminding the congregation that the Christian life is lived in anticipation of Christ’s return. This expectation is not meant to create fear, but to inspire holy living, perseverance, and hope. Paul’s final words to the Thessalonian believers center on sanctification — being made holy in every part of our being until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

“May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:23)

Rev. Liu explained that sanctification is not merely a moral improvement, but a deep inner transformation brought about by God’s Spirit. It is God who makes us holy — spirit, soul, and body — preparing us for the day Christ returns. Our role is to cooperate with God’s work by walking in obedience, prayer, and community.

He highlighted that Paul closes the letter not with fear of judgment, but with confidence in God’s faithfulness:

“The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:24)

This means that even when we stumble, our hope rests not in our own strength but in God’s ability to complete what He has started in us. Rev. Liu encouraged believers to live in readiness — not through anxiety, but by living lives of peace, love, encouragement, and integrity.

Paul’s final exhortations in verses 25–28 — to pray for one another, greet one another with love, and read God’s Word among all believers — remind us that the Christian journey is communal. As we await Christ’s return, we are called to support, bless, and build each other up in faith.

Key Scriptures

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:23–24 (NIV):
“May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.”

  • Philippians 1:6 (NIV):
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

  • Hebrews 12:14 (NIV):
“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”

Conclusion

Rev. Aaron Liu concluded that living in the light of Christ’s coming means allowing God to sanctify every part of our lives — our thoughts, words, and actions — so that we may stand blameless and faithful before Him.
It is a daily process of surrender, obedience, and trust in the God who promises to complete His good work in us.

Take-Home Message

Live each day in holiness and hope, trusting God’s faithfulness as you prepare for Christ’s return.

Reflection Questions and Answers

  1. What does it mean for God to sanctify us “through and through”?
Answer: It means that God desires to make every part of us — our spirit, soul, and body — pure and set apart for His purpose. True holiness affects not only our behavior but our inner motives, thoughts, and attitudes.

  2. How does God’s faithfulness give you confidence in your spiritual journey?
Answer: I can trust that God will never abandon the work He began in me. Even when I fail or feel weak, His faithfulness assures me that He will finish what He started and transform me into Christ’s likeness.

  3. In what ways can you cooperate with God’s work of sanctification in your daily life?
Answer: By spending time in prayer and Scripture, obeying God’s Word, repenting quickly when I fall, and surrounding myself with other believers who encourage spiritual growth.

  4. Why is community important as we live in the light of Christ’s coming?
Answer: The Christian life was never meant to be lived alone. Fellowship with others helps us stay accountable, comforted, and strengthened. We can build one another up in love and prepare together for Christ’s return.

  5. How can you live in readiness for Christ’s return without fear or anxiety?
Answer: By focusing on living faithfully each day — loving God, loving others, doing what is right, and trusting that God’s grace covers all. Readiness is not about perfection but about daily dependence on Him.

  6. What area of your life do you feel God is calling you to surrender for sanctification today?
Answer: I sense God prompting me to surrender my worries and impatience, trusting Him more fully and allowing His peace to rule my heart.

🌇 Closing Prayer

Gracious Lord,
We thank You for speaking to us this morning through thy Word. Thank You for reminding us to live each day in readiness and holiness, walking in the light of Christ. As we go forth, may thy peace sanctify us completely — spirit, soul, and body — so that we may be found blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Strengthen us to encourage one another and to live faithfully in our families, workplaces, and communities.
Keep us safe until we meet again.
In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.
