Sermon Summary
Title: A Welcome Word
Speaker: Sister Ho Gaik Kim
Date: 10 August 2025
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 2:13–16
Sister Ho Gaik Kim shared a powerful message on how the Thessalonian believers received and responded to the Word of God. Drawing from Paul’s letter to the church in Thessalonica, she highlighted that the Word of God is not just to be heard but welcomed—honored, embraced, and obeyed.
1. The Word of God – Received as Divine, Not Human (v13)
Sis Ho reminded us that the Thessalonians welcomed the message not as human words, but as it truly is—the Word of God. This distinction is critical. When we recognize Scripture as God’s voice, it demands a response of:
-
Reverence in how we read, listen, teach, and preach it.
-
Transformation as we allow it to shape our thoughts, behavior, and values.
-
Faithfulness in passing it on and living it out boldly.
-
Purity, avoiding the temptation to distort, dilute, or selectively apply it.
She urged us not to add to, subtract from, or pollute God’s Word but to uphold its authority and purity.
2. The Word at Work in Believers (v13–14)
The Word of God, when welcomed in faith, becomes active and powerful in the lives of believers. Sis Ho pointed out that:
-
It convicts us of sin and leads us to salvation in Christ.
-
It changes our identity—we become imitators of God’s churches in Christ Jesus.
-
It leads us to share not only in faith but also in the suffering that comes from standing for God’s truth.
She emphasized that transformation is not theoretical—it’s visible and often tested through trials.
3. The Word Rejected by Others (v15–16)
Sis Ho acknowledged that not everyone receives the Word. Paul mentions opposition from those who rejected the message and even persecuted its messengers.
But she cautioned us against reacting in bitterness or anger. Instead, she reminded us of Paul’s heart for his people (Romans 9:2–3; 10:1) and pointed us to Jesus’ command to:
-
Love our enemies (Matthew 5:44)
-
Pray for those who oppose us (Luke 6:27–28)
This is the mark of a mature believer—responding with grace when the Word is rejected.
Conclusion
Sis Ho Gaik Kim concluded that to truly welcome the Word is to receive it as God’s truth, let it transform our lives, and be willing to endure opposition for the sake of Christ. Welcoming the Word means aligning every area of life—our mind, heart, and will—with God’s voice.
The Thessalonians serve as an example of what it means to embrace God’s Word fully and live it out amidst challenge and suffering. May we learn from them and do the same in our time.
Take-Home Message:
To welcome God’s Word is to receive it as truth, allow it to transform our lives, and live it out with faith and love even in the face of hardship.
Amen.
Closing Prayer
Father God,
We thank Thee for this time of fellowship in Thy presence. The truths from Psalms 116 to 120 have refreshed our souls, and the message A Welcome Word hath stirred us to live out our faith with joy and courage.
Lord, help us not only to remember what we have heard, but to put it into action. Let our words, our attitudes, and our actions be a welcome word to those around us—pointing them unto Thy love and truth.
Go with us as we leave this place, guide our steps, and keep our hearts steadfast in Thee.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
