Walking in Holiness – Letting the Holy Spirit Reign 1 Thessalonians 4:3–8 by YAP Han Shawn

🌿 Walking in Holiness – Letting the Holy Spirit Reign”

Sermon Summary – Sunday, 25 May 2025
Title: Walking in Holiness
Speaker: Brother Yap
Key Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:3–8

Introduction

Brother Yap delivered a powerful message on the Christian call to holiness, emphasizing that holiness is not just a title we carry but a lifestyle we embody. Holiness means being set apart and still being sanctified. It is a continuous, deliberate journey of transformation led by God's Spirit.

1. God’s Will for Sanctification

"For this is the will of God, your sanctification..."1 Thessalonians 4:3

  • (a) Holiness is essential for our lives
Philippians 2:12–13 tells us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in us both to will and to act. Holiness is not optional but fundamental to a believer's life. It's God’s will, not man’s suggestion.

  • (b) Called to flee immorality
Christians are commanded to avoid sexual immorality, which is one of the greatest areas of compromise in modern society. Sin is severe and destructive, but the only answer is Jesus—His grace empowers us to overcome and live in purity.

2. Respecting the Body

Paul challenges believers to treat their bodies not as instruments of sin but as vessels of honor.

  • (a) Honor
We are called to honor God with our bodies and not dishonor ourselves. This is a choice we make daily — to use our bodies to glorify God or to please ourselves.
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 reminds us, “You are not your own… therefore honor God with your bodies.”

  • (b) Self-Control
Be intentional. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:23), but it must be exercised purposefully. We have self-control, but we must also take it seriously. Without discipline, desire often leads to disobedience.

3. Empowered by the Holy Spirit

There is a significant difference between the Holy Spirit dwelling in us and the Holy Spirit reigning in us.

  • The former is about His presence, the latter is about His control.

  • This power dynamic was illustrated with the ratio 380:120 – a reference to how only 120 waited in the upper room for the Holy Spirit out of the 500 Jesus revealed Himself to (1 Corinthians 15:6). Not all who are called remain committed.

When the Holy Spirit reigns in us, we walk in power, purity, and purpose. Without Him, we easily fall back into old patterns.

Additional Notes & Reflections

Brother Yap urged us to reflect on why we often fail in our walk of holiness. The struggle is real, but so is God's provision through His Spirit. Key strategies include:

  • Establishing clear, public strategies to develop self-control

  • Reflecting on how we use our bodies—are we vessels of honor or dishonor?

  • Evaluating whether we truly let the Holy Spirit reign, not just reside

Conclusion

Holiness is not about religious rules but about a relationship with a holy God. It’s about honoring Him with our minds, bodies, and choices — empowered not by willpower alone but by the Holy Spirit who reigns within us.

🕊️ One-Sentence Takeaway

Walking in holiness means choosing daily to honor God in body and spirit, rejecting sin, and allowing the Holy Spirit not just to live in us, but to reign through us.

✨ Reflection & Discussion – Answers

1. Why do many of us struggle in our walk in holiness?

Because we often attempt holiness by our own strength rather than through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. The world constantly tempts us, and without daily surrender to God, we easily drift. Also, some view holiness as restrictive, not realizing it is the path to real freedom (Romans 6:22).

2. What are some challenges you face in trying to honor God with your body, and how can you overcome them?

Challenges include media consumption, unhealthy habits, or sexual temptation. To overcome them, I must:

  • Guard my eyes and thoughts (Psalm 101:3),

  • Set personal boundaries, and

  • Be accountable to a trusted spiritual mentor.
Daily prayer and Scripture keep my mind renewed (Romans 12:1-2).

3. A tip to grow in self-control: Have a clear, public strategy. Discuss.

Yes! A “clear, public strategy” means being specific, structured, and accountable:

  • Define the struggle (e.g., screen time, food, laziness),

  • Set a goal (e.g., no screens after 10PM),

  • Tell someone to hold you accountable,

  • Track your progress, and let the Holy Spirit lead.

Self-control is the fruit of the Spirit, not a human willpower act. (Galatians 5:22-23)

4. Do you take the Holy Spirit for granted? Share an aspect of your life where you have not/no longer let the Holy Spirit reign. What will you do to make a change to allow the Holy Spirit to reign?

Yes, I sometimes take Him for granted in my daily decisions—choosing based on logic instead of seeking His counsel. I’ve neglected letting Him guide my schedule and priorities. Moving forward, I will start my day asking, “Holy Spirit, lead me today,” and pause before major decisions to listen for His prompting (John 14:26).

🙏 Final Thought

Holiness is not a burden—it’s a blessing. It's not about what we give up, but what we gain: intimacy with God, spiritual clarity, and lasting peace. The Holy Spirit doesn’t just want to visit; He wants to dwell and reign. Will you let Him?

🍽 Closing Prayer

Dear Lord,

As we conclude this beautiful time of sharing, we lift our hearts in thanksgiving. Thank You for the delicious meal, the warm fellowship, and the opportunity to reconnect in person. You are the Giver of all joy, and we praise You for the love that fills this room.

Thank You for sustaining us through seasons apart. We pray now that You continue to unite us in spirit and truth, beyond meetings and meals, and deepen our desire to walk with You daily.

We pray for thy divine protection as we part ways—cover us and our loved ones with thy grace and mercy. Shield our homes, families, and elders from harm, and bless our church community with peace and direction.

Lord, do remember our fragile earth. As temperatures rise and the land dries, we plead for thy mercy—send refreshing rain. May thy healing touch be upon the earth and upon our hearts.

Help us to walk in thy holiness and shine thy light in our communities until we meet again.

We commit all things into thy hands, Lord.
In Jesus’ precious name we pray,
Amen.
